Now considered a classic, Enter the Gungeon is a fast and frenetic bullet-hell shooter that uses procedural generation and immense build variety to double up as a roguelike. As well as having various playable characters, it has literally hundreds of weapons to pick up and experiment with, making mastery of this game a mean feat to accomplish.
The premise of the game is to make your way through the titular Gungeon, defeating enemies and collecting loot as the difficulty progressively ramps up. While simple in theory, it is — like many roguelikes — fiendishly difficult in execution. —CM

Moria
Properly entitled “The Dungeons of Moria”, its name immediately gives away that it’s set in a specific location of the Middle Earth universe devised by J.R.R. Tolkien for his Lord of the Rings saga. For those unfamiliar — how dare you! — Moria is a huge underground city inhabited by dwarves.
The final goal of the game, not surprisingly, is to kill a balrog that occupies one of the deepest levels of the dungeon. The game is clearly reminiscent of D&D, with lots of parameters for the player’s character that shape the progress of the game itself.

Your weapons range from basic to impressive to outrightly ridiculous. I mean, there is a gun that shoots rainbows, and that’s not even the most ridiculous one!
In Enter The Gungeon, your task is to travel the depths of a fortress, combing through each floor in search of an “ultimate” weapon – a gun that can shoot the past. As you complete each floor, you have to defeat a new boss before you can proceed.
Open up treasure chests and boost your weaponry as you go, you’re going to need them to stay alive.

Everyone knows this Devolver masterpiece. Enter the Gungeon has become known all around the Internet, and the game has grown a massive modding community. Players enter a gun-themed dungeon in search of the Gun That Can Kill the past.
The controls are easy to learn, but hard to master. The game has charming graphics and character design that will pull them right in, as well as having a variety of guns larger than any other game. If players can think of a gun, the game probably has it. If not, there’s probably a mod somewhere out there that does.

Hades is a masterpiece when it comes to dungeon crawling and roguelike games. Your character is Hades’ son, Zagreus, trying to escape from the Underworld and make his way to Mount Olympus. Hades’ cyclical narrative is presented through its procedural runs and a compelling story and evocative cast of characters.
Many blessings have been given to you by the gods of Olympus, but your quest is not an easy one. A game like this will enthrall you and entice you to keep playing until you get some better stuff for your characters. After each failure, you are resurrected in your own house, the House of Hades, where your friends and family await your following conversation. It is one of the best roguelike titles out there.
Risk of Rain

Strange planets and horrifying monsters await you in Risk of Rain, a Metroidvania game with roguelike elements. Enemies get progressively harder over time, meaning that each run is a mad scramble for resources and XP. After a while, defeating the increasingly difficult enemies becomes second nature as you learn to summon bosses for a boost in XP.
Four-player co-op definitely adds a lot to the experience, making each encounter more tense and dynamic. There are 10 characters to unlock and choose from, each with its own play style. The core mechanic of enemies getting harder as time goes on is enough to make Risk of Rain stand out, and its excellent platforming mechanics take it somewhere even better.

Following the steps of its prequel, Risk of Rain 2 is a successful RPG roguelike that succeeds at making players feel alone, yet fully accompanied. This game puts players on a fierce planet full of wildlife that can (and will) kill them. This challenging first-person shooter will put one’s skills to the test.
Risk of Rain 2 has many characters for players to unlock, and each has a different playstyle, so they’ll definitely find someone they like the best. Mastering Risk of Rain 2 is no joke though, and the hardcore Monsoon difficulty can make even the best players throw their controllers in frustration.

Moonlighter does a very interesting thing. The main game is split up into two modes. One feels traditionally more like a rogue-lite with randomly generated dungeons and gear that is lost upon death. The other mode has you run a shop and sell the items you managed to salvage throughout your run. It throws you into a dungeon headfirst and hopes you find your way out and then slows that right down as you talk to townsfolk, sell items for way too much and just soak up the great music. You frantically hop around rooms fighting enemies that are too strong for you and then the brevity of everyday life relaxes you like a massage at the end of a long day. It might not be quite as replayable as some of the other titles in this list due to its defined progression but it by far one of the most playable.

Isaac is a tormented, tragic soul who constantly finds himself outnumbered and outgunned in a brutal nightmare world. The game has seen huge success over the years, with the developer adding new content and new versions to the game consistently.
The sheer variety on offer here is the main reason to play. No two runs are remotely the same, with Isaac donning new cosmetic items and abilities from the get-go. Great value for money and insanely high praise from critics and fans alike make The Binding of Isaac well worth your time, whichever version you choose to pick up.

A spin-off that few saw coming, Cadence of Hyrule takes the fantastic gameplay of the original Crypt of the Necrodancer and puts a Legend of Zelda twist on the entire spectacle.
Not only can players take control of Link and Zelda, but updates also allow the player to control Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask and Impa, the recurring nursemaid of Princess Zeldawith her own score to settle with Ganon’s monsters. Topped off with some great remixes of classic Zelda tracks, it’s very easy to pick up, and love this game despite its crushing difficulty at times.

The game that popularised the idea of a roguevania (even though Rogue Legacy arguably did it earlier, they just didn’t coin the phrase), Dead Cells is one of the most complete games ever made and perhaps the textbook example of how to use Early Access well. From its lighter beginnings to the content monolith it is now, Dead Cells utilised Early Access better than most games ever have. And Motion Twin aren’t done with it yet.
Playing as The Prisoner, effectively a big load of purple sentient goo that make its way into a set of armour, Dead Cells is set across an always-changing castle (they love castles, these rogue-esque games) with you even being able to change paths depending on how deep into Dead Cells’ layers you’ve dived. You could technically finish a run and not see every location and level, and you almost definitely won’t be able to sample every one of the ninety weapons and items, ranging from the frying pan to the katana.
With permanent upgrades to soften the blow of permadeath, Dead Cells is a roguelite that also borrows from Metroidvania and Dark Souls, providing combat that is initially going to make you want to put your face through a window but eventually leave you feeling like a god. After time, the bosses that took you forever to beat will become barely any more of a distraction than the grunts, a nuisance for you to swat aside with your trusty frying pan.
A brilliant game that rewards patience with a power trip, it doesn’t really matter whether you play Dead Cells for the fifth or fiftieth time, you’re going to want to sell your soul for this game once it gets its hooks in you.

Nuclear Throne is a fast-paced roguelite from one of my favorite indie developers, Vlambeer. Aside from loving the action and secrets lurking, I can’t get over the soundtrack. This is a game I’d convince you to buy for the soundtrack alone. That aside, Nuclear Throne is a post-apocalyptic top-down shooter with 15 different characters that each have their own unique playstyle.
My favorite character is the Chicken that comes back to life after death if they find health while running around headless. Roguelike features in Nuclear Throne include permadeath, randomly generated maps, no meta progression, and per usual, a high but satisfying challenge. Despite Vlambeer shutting down in September 2020, they’re easily still a great developer worth supporting. Check out Nuclear Throne on Steam.
The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is often considered to be one of the best rogue-lite games available on Steam. Game designer Edmund McMillen used his religious upbringing to come up with the original plot and grotesque monsters found in its procedurally generated dungeons.
As Isaac, players must use tears to fight creepy enemies in this top-down roguelike. The nightmarish level designs look simple at first glance, but its retro-style parody of biblical figures and anthropomorphic feces soon take center stage. It’s a strange but immersive take on the genre with hard-hitting themes and engaging gameplay that fans will not soon forget.

Best Roguelike Games You Can Play Right Now
This sci-fi rogue-like places you in the role of a mutant from the dunes and jungle areas of Qud, or from one of a plethora of other locales. You can assemble a unique character from over 70 different mutations and defects (yes, defects) with wings, four arms, other cool stuff like cloning powers, or even flaming hands. All this in order to explore a procedurally-generated map with worlds created out of nearly 1 million maps.
While exploring the game, you can hack off monster limbs, become a spider, form allegiances with beings you never even thought about communicating with, and deal with each character’s death as a permanent happening in this austere role-playing game. It’s certainly one of the most unique roguelike selections to come out in the past year or so, especially considering its sci-fi origins and attempts to think outside the box.
2 Crypt Of The Necrodancer (Metascore 92)
Novelty has always been one of the strongest points of roguelike games, and each new one is more unique than the other. Crypt of the Necrodancer takes the cake in that regard, as it’s a roguelike music combat game where the players fight through undead-infested dungeons with rhythmic notes and dancing.
So, when they’re not pulling their hairs out from dying and starting over again in Crypt of the Necrodancer, the players are usually jamming to the sick beats. Everything in Crypt of the Necrodancer must be done by dancing to the music, from attacking enemies to simply walking into the dungeon rooms—don’t be a killjoy, now.

Nuclear Throne, a post-apocalyptic roguelike with similarities to Spelunky was first published by Vlambeer in 2015.
Your job is to fight and shoot your way through the wastelands that are the game’s setting, collecting powerful power-ups that boost the efficiency of your weaponry or the health of your warriors.
Be warned, clicking the default “menu” option that pops up on your screen when you pause the game takes you right back to the main menu, completely wiping out your progress.
Spelunky
Going back to the more traditional concept of exploring the underground, Spelunky takes the whole ordeal quite literally, as the character even wears a miner’s hat (and features a mysteriously red nose). It’s definitely more casual than other games in this list, and you would be forgiven if it reminded you of Sonic or Super Mario at a glance, as that’s the vibe that the developers went with.
It even does away with convoluted tutorials by strategically placing background explainers on new actions wherever they’re needed. One of the most amusing parts is the fairly unorthodox approach to handling damsels in distress. This is easily one of the best Roguelike games on Steam—or at least one of the funniest.

22. Risk of Rain Returns

We generally avoid repeat series entries for round-ups like this, but we’ll make an exception for Risk of Rain Returns because it feels incredibly different from Risk of Rain 2, which came out in 2019 and can be found a little higher on this list. This is a fabulous remake of the original 2D side-scrolling action roguelike, and it feels even better than new. With more items, more playable characters, dramatically upgraded graphics, alternate skills that add a huge amount of replay value, and infinitely better co-op support, Risk of Rain Returns is really just Risk of Rain 1.5, modernized for a whole new audience after 10 years.

Invisible, Inc. finds you taking control of a series of special agents looking to infiltrate the world’s biggest (and most dangerous) corporations. You can choose one of the 10 unlockable characters at the start of the games and six different programs to help you fight your way through security programs. Each playthrough finds you working your way through a randomly-generated world with various loot, enemies, and traps to keep you on your toes.
Your agents, items, and programs will constantly change with each playthrough, and there are even five different game modes to select from, with custom generation settings that let you make each new try better than the last. With a set of animated cutscenes and fully-voiced scenes, there’s plenty of narratives to sink your teeth into here as well.

Its name being a witty portmanteau of Streets of Rage and Rogue gives a surprisingly ok expression of what exactly Streets of Rogue gives you: the opportunity to punch bad guys whilst also giving you the freedom of a large top-down map. This being said, what makes Streets of Rogue so good is the way it blends so many systems together so efficiently. Like Noita above it, Streets of Rogue has a rather wonderful responsiveness to each action. You steal from a bin, maybe someone reports that and security becomes higher in the area making your main mission a little harder. You decide to break a window to distract a guard but it instead alarms everyone around meaning you can’t poison the air system. You are given a task and must complete it in any way you see fit but the most genius thing about Streets of Rogue is that you have to live with those decisions. Each dumb decision makes you a little smarter, makes your situation a little harder and your game much funner.
