They bring out not only the love interest’s own motivations that might go unseen in the main story, but add further exploration into their characterisation, and their own perception of events and thoughts — sometimes even concerning the main character.

Does Tears of Themis Cost Money?

Whether Tears of Themis is going to cost you money or not is entirely dependant on how you want to play it. In the game, you are given options to top up your account; this will allow you to quickly restore AP and draw better cards from the gacha system, allowing you to blaze through the story.

Tip: Keep in mind that if you want to do every route in the game, it can get rather costly or take up a good portion of your time.

The cost of an elusive SRR card can reach up to $300, similar to the cost of a five-star character in Genshin Impact. You will want to balance your free S-Chips between pulls and progressing the story in order not to end up waiting. Like with other mobile games, there are events that will give you free items, and you do get a few ten pulls for free when starting the game. To complete your exploration, you need to clear all of the Manor’s Objectives, which can be accessed through the Tablet menu. This means Investigating the sparkling spots in all the specified rooms on each floor using the right characters. Opening the Tablet will also show you a mini-map of the Manor, making it easier to maneuver.

Don’t skip the locked objects inside some rooms, as unlocking them will merit you game rewards, such as Stellin. Moreover, some areas can only be accessed with various keys, which you can obtain by raising Skadi Island residents’ Affection.

During the event, players can choose one MR card of the four male leads as the final prize, and play up to a total of four rounds. The choice of reward for a round cannot be changed once it has been made. By completing limited-time event missions, players can obtain many rewards, such as Stellin, Home Deco Vouchers, and Queen’s Love Songs, which can be used to exchange for the new “Love in the Air” MR cards: Luke “Companionship,” Artem “Intentions,” Vyn “Promise,” and Marius “Keepsake.”

Love in Flight

In addition to romantic moments, the other limited-time event “Love in Flight” will be available from 2/9 12:00 to 2/24 23:59 (UTC+9), and it will bring players a thrilling spark of excitement! As a generous and warm-hearted citizen of the city of Stellis, players will be given the chance to help postal workers overwhelmed by love letters! Utilize advanced technology to send love letters to every corner of the country! To play, Attorneys will use the Big Data Lab’s latest intel bird to deliver love letters. Points are earned by flying past buildings and completing letter deliveries, and by collecting gifts and items during flight. The four male leads will also offer different protective effects during the flights. Their protection can only be obtained once per round in a fixed order. For those of dauntless spirit, there will also be a Late Night Challenge Mode after passing Marius’ building. Break beyond limits and unlock unique achievements! Extra HP bars can be gained by sharing the event or inviting friends to assist. Don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy this event with friends!

Gameplay breakdown

To label Tears of Themis as “the Ace Attorney otome” feels suitably fitting. It’s high time we saw an otome title centred around the intricate and high tension drama of a courtroom and presented in such an appealing way.

Tears of Themis’ story takes centre stage, with its romantic aspects best explored through the character stories of its four love interests during “Visits”. The setup here will not be too unfamiliar to any fan of the genre on the mobile platform, with the previously covered Obey Me! following a similar narrative structure.

However, Tears of Themis strikes gold in balancing these two important elements just right. For those who want an appealing and engrossing detective adventure game, you have this in the main story, and those who are more interested in what romance the game has to offer can put more of their energy into progressing through each character’s story to witness all the adorable and fluffy material.

In the detective portion of the game, inspecting individuals and making conclusions can feel like a 50/50 selection at times, but making the correct assumptions feels all the more satisfying if you manage to do so without making use of the hint button.

The hint option is available during investigations, whereby a point-and-click system takes over after the visual novel narrative arrives at a particular destination. And you’ll sometimes need that helping hand at these moment; as miHoYo have been amazingly thorough in concealing clues in some scenes.

The hint mechanic is not at all an unwelcome tool, since it sets the player up with choosing how difficult they want these sections to be. In a rush and want to get the investigation over and done with for more story? Consider it done; the choice is yours, after all.

While the interrogation portion is the most simple of these procedures as the game does not ask anything of the player during this time, the linking of statements and items does well to make up for it. Successfully solving why statements or items are connected feels the most satisfying of all the mechanics.

Possibly the only trip up on such a hand-holding system comes in the form of Tears of Themis’ final trials. These Ace Attorney-styled courtroom showdowns at the end of every chapter really shine in their presentation, with splendid animations of our MC donning a pair of spectacles and a nice suit to effectively deal out justice with style.

The individual animations of our legal opponents is also a neat and appreciated attention to detail. Its gameplay here, however, is a bit too easygoing despite the high tension of the ongoing verbal battle. Selecting the wrong answer or providing the incorrect evidence just points you back to retrying it until you select the right outcome.

This is understandable for a mobile game; players wouldn’t respond well to being hit with a Game Over and having to expend more energy to retry the same chapter. It is worth pointing out, though, due to how it pulls down the high stakes of such a key moment, and again brings down the overall difficulty of the game.

Basic Rundown

Tears of Themis puts you in the shoes of a lawyer surrounded by several possible suitors. Along with navigating your way to romance, you will need to worry about managing the story by performing as a successful lawyer. You will need to talk to witnesses and figure out puzzles, much like in the Ace Attorney series, to progress through the story. This all unfolds in a visual novel style, where you will be able to use dialogue choices to learn about the people and world around you.

The game is divided up into several different chapters that you will need to unlock using the game’s AP system as you play; this makes it rather hard to burn through this visual novel in the same way you would Ozmafia or Code Realize. If you have played other mobile visual novels, though, you will likely be quite used to the system used to progress the story.

Using the Lucky Fruit Tarts, you can exchange them for rewards at the Faerie Hut. There are six boxes full of rewards, with a box opening after you’ve gotten all of the highlighted rewards of the box before it. (i.e. if you grab the Tear and Choice Star from Box 3, you may move on to Box 4).

I recommend getting through the boxes as quick as you can, because even if you advance to the next box, you don’t lose access to the previous one, so as soon as you unlock the next one, advance! On box 5, you can get an Aurora Invitation, which allows you to exchange for one of the following Invitations for your Home Screen: Luke “Gracious Invitation,” Artem “Your Gaze,” Vyn “A Shared Moment,” Marius “Sharing A Drink.”
