12 Smelter Arch-Demon

Any of those who have played through this installment of the Souls series will remember facing down the Smelter Demons, and the headache they inevitably cause. Show off your mastery of conquering these gigantic foes with this build.

Kill the first Smelter Demon to gain access to his armor and sword. Then kill the aged Smelter Demon to access the Aged Smelter Sword. With that done, pump your Strength to 60. This will allow you to effectively dual-wield these massive swords. Dump the rest of your points into vitality and then into Intelligence if you can afford it, to maximize damage. Note that this build will need a few Fragrant Branches of Yore to become accessible, so make sure you have a few on hand.

Dark Souls 3: Deluxe Edition

Souls 3 modding is in the wild and experimental phase. New tools are being created every day, giving modders deeper access to the files than in any other FromSoft game. Entirely new weapons, armour sets and spells can be created, although map editing is still a work-in-progress.

Cinders by «Xylozi» & Team

«Iban The Dude» showcases Cinders’ impressive range of new magic.

Cinders is the biggest Souls 3 mod, and still in active development, offering both regular and experimental ‘playtest’ versions, depending on how bold you’re feeling. Seemingly unconcerned with lore or telling a coherent story, Cinders feels like a free-wheeling sandbox variant on the game. There’s tons of new classes to pick from, some of which have entirely new gear, and progression is faster than the vanilla game, geared to getting you into the juicy mid-game character building part more quickly. Magic users will find scads of new spells to play with, too. Progression through the game is vastly more open in Cinders, thanks to the placement of some interesting shortcuts, including one that leads straight to Archdragon Peak from the beginning of the game.

There are a lot of other smart features to this mod. Around the starting hub you’ll find notebooks detailing the fundamentals, including how they’ve re-worked covenants into offline buffs, rewritten status ailments, and rejgged crafting. There’s even an optional hard mode, activated by picking a new option from the Firekeeper’s menu, which adds extra enemies to the world that go berserk at low health, but drop extra souls to compensate. This is on top of tougher, meaner enemy placement, too, so buckle up.

Buckle extra hard, in fact, as there are 70-something new mini-bosses scattered across the world to kill or be killed by. Even if it’s not narratively coherent, it’s liberating to have so much freedom right from the beginning. You can even re-fight old bosses (in original or ‘nightmare’ forms) for extra rewards by talking to the Handmaid.

Ascension by «VanBuinen»

Sequel to the popular mod of the same name for the original game, this one can best be summed up as Dark Souls 3: Super Turbo Championship Edition. This is for players who’ve cut their teeth on the regular game and committed all the boss attack patterns to heart. If you’re feeling bold, however, it’s a surprisingly entertaining time, provided you can get over the initial difficulty hump and punch your way through a beefed-up Iudex Gundyr. By the time I had a chance to level up, I was sitting on a bounty of 16,000 souls.

While a much smaller download and less ambitious mod, the Ascension’s effect is immediately visible, and frequently hilarious. There are around twice as many baddies, and someone might have spiked their Estus because they’re extremely aggro and twitchy. Every room is a murder-gauntlet, with the suffering slightly offset by the fact that you level up extremely quickly and put together your favoured character build in no time. On top of turbo-charging baddies, it rebalances a lot of items and spells, and rejigs Covenants into single-player buffs. You can see the full list of tweaks made here.

While I’d not recommend either Cinders or Ascension to newer players, they’re fun picks for a return trip through the game — not that you need an excuse to immerse yourself in Dark Souls 3’s combat sandbox again. And there you have it: six mods (and change) to die repeatedly for. Fitting for a series about the tireless, obsessive undead that the game should still be alive and kicking after all these years. I wonder what the trilogy will look like in another five? Judging by teaser shots of this upcoming Souls 2 graphical mod by «Stayd», there’s plenty more room for improvement.

Ah, the world of poor console ports. Some game developers just relinquish to the fact that console games sell better and are drastically less pirated than PC games. So, they put little effort into porting their games to the PC. The original Dark Souls was infamous for this fact. Dark Souls II has improved, but there is room for further improvement. Thus the community has stepped in to pick up where the developers left off. This mod is an example of such effort. This will change the XBox controller icons with lovely mouse and keyboard versions. If you play on PC (which is likely if you are reading this), then grab this file. A subtle yet critical improvement.

14 The Wall

They say the best offense is a good defense. Never has that saying been truer than in this build. Dark Souls 2 was known for its revamping of the dual-wielding mechanic, making quite literally any weapon viable in a dual-wielding capacity. Slap two massive greatshields into this equation and you have a recipe for one of the most iconic builds of this title.

Wear the heaviest armor you can tolerate for poise. Then collect both the Reeve and Orma Greatsheilds. Pump Vigor, Vitality, and Strength into the character, and prepare to literally steamroll any enemies in your path. This might even be a good build for a beginner. After all, the difficulty of a Souls game is dramatically reduced when nothing can hit you.

6 Havel Cosplay

It should be no surprise that Havel’s build continues to be one of the greatest since it seems like a new hero recycles his equipment every thousand years or so. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

Collect Havel’s set, and pump Strength and Faith to 50. Equip your favorite miracles, and infuse Dragon’s Tooth with lightning. Finally, set Vitality up high enough so that you can move. It’s a simple build, but Dragon’s Tooth can pancake any enemy that gets close, and lightning miracles can be used to snipe any enemies that are out of reach. Not to mention you won’t believe the damage this build is capable of once it is completed.

3 Ultimate Sorcerer

Dark Souls teaches us that we must always honor our history, and so it is that we honor Big Hat Logan with this build. Crystal Sorceries are a must, as well as other high damage sorceries like Soul Greatsword and Soul Geyser. In order to maximize the damage for this build, get your hands on the Unleash Magic Sorcery, and the Staff of Wisdom.

Though Logan’s iconic big hat is not available in this title, there are a few pieces of equipment you can find to imitate his look. The Black Set owned by Straid of Olaphis is a great body armor to imitate Logan’s Robes. The Astrologist’s Hat and the Black Witch’s Hat are the closest approximation of Logan’s Big Hat available in the title.

Ambient Occlusion using HBAO+

Turning on the in-game Ambient Occlusion (AO) will improve the game’s lighting to a reasonable extent, but if you have an Nvidia video card then you’ll want to use its HBAO+, which you can activate right from the Nvidia control panel itself. Here’s how.

Dark Souls 2 is a direct port of the Xbox 360 version of the game, which runs on DirectX 9. HBAO+ is available to implement on both DX9 and DX11 games, so therefore Dark Souls 2 can take advantage of Nvidia’s in-built AO improvements. 

To set up HBAO+, download the driver updaters here and replicate the exact settings in your Nvidia control panel as shown here (it’s a little hard to read, but just make sure Ambient Occlusion is set to Quality under the Global Settings tab):

The following image is of Dark Souls 2 with the in-game Ambient Occlusion implemented and HBAO+ implemented. The difference is subtle, but still noticeable.

Downsample from 4K

To achieve the very best graphics settings, downsampling is your friend. Dark Souls 2 supports arbitrary resolutions, but you can implement downsampling as a replacement for the game’s anti-aliasing settings.

Downsampling is the act of tweaking your graphics cards’ settings so that it can run a custom resolution that is higher than the resolution settings of your monitor. This means that if you have a standard 1920×1080 monitor, you can adjust your graphics settings so that your monitor supports a higher resolution. Of course, this could result in performance problems in Dark Souls 2, but by making the right adjustments to your settings you should eventually hit that sweet spot. Learn more about downsampling here. 

Downsampling from a 4K resolution will allow you to play Dark Souls 2 in full HD, giving you the very best graphics setting available. If you have the luxury of a 4K monitor then you needn’t worry about downsampling, but for everyone else you’ll need to tinker with your graphics card’s setting to get the game to properly render  By choosing a custom resolution setting in-game of 7680×4320, you can display Dark Souls 2 at a downsampled 4K resolution. Download Durante’s ‘GeDoSaTo’ mod

Durante’s work on the first Dark Souls is well-noted, as his DSfix mod turned what was a lazy PC port on behalf of developer From Software into a port that was arguably better than its console counterparts.

While DSfix was released a few hours following Dark Souls‘ release on the PC, Durante released the alpha version of GeDoSaTo BEFORE Dark Souls 2 was even made available on Steam. While Dark Souls 2 PC is a much more successful port than its predecessor, GeDoSaTo makes the game a hell of a lot prettier, enabling texture modding, arbitrary downsampling and more.

Seeing as how this is the alpha version of the mod there are a few known issues, such as the game crashing when players attempt to take a screenshot. These are all addressed in a blog post by Durante, and will likely be fixed in the very near future.

2 Fastest Staff In The West

Dark Souls 2 really revamped its sorcery game, and the developers wanted you to know it. Not only are there tons of powerful Hexes and Sorceries in this game, but there is also lots of equipment that can push your build even further.

For this build choose either Dark or normal Sorceries. Next, get your hands on the Lion Mage Robe, Lion Mage Cuffs, Lion Mage Skirt, Clear Bluestone Ring, and the Black Hood. With all of these items equipped, your character will be able to cast spells 46 percent faster. That is unless you can find the Clear Bluestone Ring +2, in which case you can cast 86 percent faster. That nearly doubles your casting speed, meaning you can become a spamming menace early in the game.

1 Unstoppable Vampire

Take the old trope of vampires gaining health from those they have killed, and give them that healing constantly. That sounds unstoppable to us, and that is the purpose of this build. This one does require many items from the Crown of the Ivory King DLC, so be prepared to beat the game at least once before trying this one out.

For this one, get your hands on the Charred Loyce Shield, The Crown of the Ivory King, and the Ring of Restoration. All of these items together will give you a constant Health regeneration of five and a half HP per second. The Eleum Loyce Curved Sword from the same DLC will heal you when you hit enemies with strong attacks. Use these items in conjunction with the Resplendent Life and Warmth Miracles, and you should never have to worry about using Estus Flasks again.

5 Bait And Switch

Nothing feels quite as good as beating an opponent with brains rather than brawn. If this sounds like your play style, try out this next build. For this one, get your hands on the Shadow Dagger, the Eagle Shield, and the biggest «Ultra» class weapon of your choice. The idea with this build is to wear the lightest armor possible and goad enemies into attacking you.

You can riposte their attacks with the shield, and then follow up with a critical attack for major damage. But that’s not all this build has up its sleeve. Put the Ultra weapon in the second slot of your main hand after the dagger. Ultra weapons do the highest critical damage in the game, and using the brief riposte frames, switch to the Ultra weapon and really surprise your opponent.

7 Barbarian Scholar

Magic has always been known to be a powerful offensive medium in Dark Souls. But simply pointing and casting at enemies can be a bit boring. To spice things up put away that magic stave and replace it with something a little flashier.

Pump strength to 40 and collect the Aged Smelter Demon Sword again. Next pump Intelligence to 50 but don’t collect any spells or staves. Instead, get the Moonlight Greatsword, and equip it as your off-hand weapon. The Moonlight Greatsword’s Weapon art is that it shoots powerful magical beams forward. Anytime you’d normally use spells, just use the sword’s Weapon Art instead.

Dark Souls Remastered

Some of you might be asking «why Remastered, and not the original Prepare To Die edition?» Two reasons. The first, and more personal reason, is that I’m on a laptop with a 75hz-native monitor which the older version of the game just doesn’t play nice with. Second, and possibly more important, is that the original release of the game is no longer for sale on any major storefront. So, Remastered it is. Which is fine, as it means you still get to play the biggest and best version on offer.

Daughters Of Ash by «Grimrukh»

«Wikloe» on YouTube challenges a ‘new’ boss recovered from Dark Souls’ cut content vault.

Probably the largest and most fleshed out of all the mods here, Daughters Of Ash stretches Dark Souls’ assets to new limits. While unable to add new models or creatures to the game (though some are restored from cut content) or drastically remodel areas, modder Grimrukh has somehow created what feels like an elseworlds version of the game. The stated goal is to recapture that sense of playing Dark Souls for the first time, and I was certainly on edge the first time I delved into the dead city beneath the Firelink shrine. This time, though, instead of ghost-murder hell I found a quiet, sad place, and an easy path to a far more lively Valley Of Drakes.

Even before that, this mod had surprises for me. Previously easily-reached areas are locked off, and new paths are opened up, making progression through Daughters Of Ash a remarkably fresh-feeling experience. The Asylum Demon fight took on a scary twist when a rotund demon butt-stomp plunged us into the basement. The mod wiki (which I recommend skipping on until you’ve played) says that this was a random event, and results in a tougher fight later on.

Daughters Of Ash saves a lot of its best for later. Several boss fights are now multi-phase encounters that reference the mod’s new expanded lore, and brutal challenges await those who uncover the dark secret of Anor Londo. There’s some technical rough edges like objects popping in as you cross room thresholds, but this one is a must-play for Souls fans. While I played the version of the mod for Dark Souls Remastered (which is easier to set up), there is a multiplayer-compatible version for the older Prepare To Die Edition of the game, available here. Daughters Of Ash is especially eye-opening if you’ve played Dark Souls to death, with many surprises I don’t want to spoil.

Prepare To Die Again: Lordan Reborn by Lionblade Studio

If Daughters Of Ash and its sweeping changes was a bit much, Prepare To Die Again: Lordran Reborn might be more to your tastes. On paper, it does a lot of similar things — reshuffling and rebalancing encounters, adding new scripting and events to boss battles and pouring in a bucketload of new rings and spells to collect. Handy, as the overall difficulty has been boosted a little. Not surprising, as Dark Souls modders tend to be players who have mastered the game in its entirety, but perhaps something to look out for if you’re just a casual fire-linker.

4 Bulldozer

Enemies can be an annoyance in Dark Souls 2, always there to impede progress. This threat can be mitigated if the enemies can never get up off of the ground. For this build get the Shockwave and Soul Bolt Sorceries. For your main weapon, you can have any Great Hammer, but we recommend the Smelter Hammer.

The strategy here is fairly simple: Shockwave and Soulbolt knock enemies down when they hit small enemies. While the enemies are recovering from their first bonk, follow it up with a strong attack from the Great Hammer. This will ensure that enemies can not recover their footing before being squashed.
