Gears 5 is another prominent name on our lists, and it has largely followed the Halo Infinite formula. For the single-player campaign, the game has taken an open-world approach, allowing players to make their own way.
For the multiplayer, Gears 5 does a great job of combining elements from the older Gears games and mixing in new elements. The basic gameplay is still the same, but there is a lot of content to try out. The developers have done a good job of adding new content since the game came out, keeping the multiplayer fresh.
There are also numerous PvE modes for players to take part in, including a horde mode where a group of players faces an endless number of enemies.

While Resident Evil is a franchise best associated with PlayStation, it’s been a multiplatform series for a while and the latest entry in the series, Resident Evil Village, is great on Xbox Series X. On Microsoft’s console you get access to ray tracing and the Smart Delivery system, which means if you purchased it on Xbox One you get a free update to the Series X and Series S version.
As for Resident Evil Village itself, it’s an excellent horror-meets-adventure game. In our Resident Evil Village review, Henty T. Casey noted: «Resident Evil Village is the most engrossing game I’ve played in forever, with a twisted labyrinthine story that hooks you in and pulls you down rabbit hole after rabbit hole.»

Among Us took the world by storm when it first came out. The sheer probability of chaos that exists in the game, especially when all of the people playing are connected on voice chat makes this a must-play for large friend groups.
Although the hype surrounding the game has died down since its release, there is still a large community that plays the game. However, we won’t recommend playing Among Us with strangers. Awkward silences tend to take the fun out of the game and make it more competitive.
The fact that there is cross-platform gameplay means that not all of your friends need to have an Xbox to play with you. Even if they have a mobile phone, it is possible for you to play together. This alone makes Among Us one of the most accessible games for online play out there.

Grounded is another game that is primarily based on co-op gameplay. Although it is a survival game, it does a good job of separating itself from the other games in the genre. The main way it does that is through its story: You have been shrunken down to the size of an ant, and surviving is now very difficult.
The major obstacle standing in your way is the insect life, which is now a deadly force that will react to your every move. In order to survive, you will need to avoid predators, forage for food, build bases, and make sure that you are not targeted by anyone.
All of the game takes place in a backyard, and there is a campaign that can be played in co-op mode too. In the campaign mode, you and your friends work together to discover why you have been shrunken down to this size, and what secrets are there in the mysterious backyard around you.
Red Dead Redemption и Red Dead Redemption 2

Psychonauts 2 was an important test for Microsoft. Despite the fact that the game was set to launch on PC and PlayStation, Microsoft positioned it as an Xbox exclusive. Microsoft owns developer Double Fine, so it’s technically a first-party game. As such, it launched day one on Xbox Game Pass, making it one of the Series X’s most enticing year one releases. If it could live up to the hype of its predecessor, that would be a defining game for the service ahead of Microsoft’s major holiday push. Fortunately, it got the job done. Psychonauts 2 is an excellent platformer that’s every bit as good as the original cult classic — if not better. While it contains some familiar platforming mechanics, Double Fine turned up the heat for the sequel with more inventive level design and sincerely moving storytelling. Psychonauts 2 may look like an irreverent 1990s cartoon, but it’s a narratively ambitious game that depicts different mental health struggles with empathy. It functions both as a positive learning experience for kids and a relatable one for adults.

It Takes Two might be the best multiplayer game of its kind. The two-player adventure game is a labor of love by Hazelight Studios and director Josef Fares. Rather than pitting players against each other, it’s a pure co-op game in which players solve puzzles and platform together. Each level features entirely new mechanics that keep things fresh throughout the 12-hour adventure. It’s a game that was designed from the ground up with multiplayer in mind and that shows. Good co-op games are hard to come by. While there are tons of multiplayer games out there, few ask players to work together to progress through an authored story. It Takes Two is a rare example of a game that cares about multiplayer mechanics as much as it cares about narrative. The story is a romantic comedy about a couple on the verge of divorce who are turned into tiny dolls. They must work together to both get back to normal and repair their relationship. It’s a clever narrative framework that pairs perfectly with a genre that’s built on good communication and cooperation between players. It’s a multiplayer game that’ll save your friendships, not destroy them.

If you ever wanted to play a Metroidvania that looked like a painting in motion, there’s no other choice but Ori and the Will of the Wisps. As if the majestic art style and surprisingly touching story weren’t enough reason to pick this game up, the fact that the Series X can push it to run at a stunning 4K resolution and hold 120 frames per second is just icing on the cake. This sequel is a full-on improvement over the great first title, with a large world to explore, new moves to learn, and more bosses to overcome. If you’re a fan of the Metroidvania genre, this indie title proves that even a smaller team can create a game that feels as polished and rewarding as any big-budget studio.

Bethesda’s first new IP in decades is a game of near peerless ambition. Though occasionally its repetitive gameplay loop may sag at times, the sheer scope of Starfield’s universe feels almost boundless in a way that’s thoroughly intoxicating.
Going from Working Joe space miner to galaxy-saving hero courtesy of a convenient sci-fi MacGuffin is the sort of rags to riches tale Bethesda specializes in, and there’s no denying the formula still works. While Starfield may not grant you the freedom to explore the cosmos in quite the same way No Man’s Sky does, this is still a stellar sci-fi epic, with the best combat the developer has ever eked out from one of its titles and a game engine that frequently looks spectacular.

We are not mentioning which FIFA because you should go for whichever one is the newest. Even though the most hardcore football fans who only play FIFA on their Xbox will admit the game is not perfect, it has to be said that the game has a lot of multiplayer features.
The biggest one is Ultimate Team, where you get to slowly build your team and compete with other players in single matches and tournaments. While the concept is very interesting, the mode does unfortunately have a lot of pay-to-win elements.
However, there are many other online modes that do not have any of these elements. For example, you can play the Seasons mode where the sole purpose is for you to pick a team and win against the competition. it is also possible for players to take part in online matches directly.

The last game on our list of the best online multiplayer games for Xbox Series X / S is the one that sort of began it all. Quake is one of the games that bought multiplayer gaming into the limelight, and id Software is still delivering quality online gameplay decades later.
The remastered version of the original Quake brings back all the content from the original and adds a few expansion packs to the mix. The skill ceiling is atrociously high, although you can only do so much with a controller.
If you are looking for a pure skill-based fragging experience, there is no game currently available on Xbox that can match Quake. Although the graphics still look very outdated despite the remaster, those who only care about the gameplay will definitely not care.
